What’s this newsletter about?
Both as an author of science and nature books for young readers, and as an inquisitive traveler, I’ve had many special experiences, many of them thanks to the nature of my work—when you write nonfiction for young readers, the people in charge of research open up in ways tourists aren’t able to experience—e.g. visiting an endangered trumpeter swan chick in its pen at a breeding center (don’t wear red and watch out for its sharply pointed beak!) or carefully wending your way through a crowded pelican rookery, avoiding abundant blobs of poop, your ears assaulted by the cries of hungry chicks. Or snuggle with a litter of young wolf pups? (I was a lot younger then)
Travel with me here on my Substack newsletter and you’ll see what I mean as you read my posts. I also tend to see the world in different ways from the usual; hence the word ‘quirky’.
